Yes, you can borrow from each of the outboard seating positions up to 22” if the vehicle manufacturer permits this method of installation.
Yes, ALL fashions (both fabrics and foams) on the Mesa Max are free of fire-retardant chemicals. Gregory and Greyson fashions feature Merino wool which is naturally fire retardant, and the DualKnit fabric in Jake, Noa and Anthony fashions are not treated with any fire-retardant chemicals. All fashions comply with the federal car safety flammability standards (FMVSS 302).
The harness pads are optional. They may need to be removed when using the Mesa Max with a smaller child to achieve proper harness tightness and chest clip placement.
The Mesa Max seat pad, infant insert, buckle pad and shoulder pads can be machine washed on the gentle cycle. Lay flat to dry. We recommend spot cleaning the canopy and plastic parts. The harness webbing should be cleaned with warm water and Dawn soap.
Yes, the base can be used without the load leg. However, we recommend using the load leg to optimize safety of the child in the seat. Load leg should be placed in stowed position when not in use.
Yes, the Mesa Max carrier is FAA approved when used according to the instruction manual. We suggest you travel with your Mesa Max in flight for optimal safety. The Mesa Max base is not approved for aircraft use.
When installing in a vehicle, the Mesa Max can make contact with the front vehicle seat if it does not impact the installation of the car seat and is approved by the vehicle manufacturer. The Mesa Max base must remain in full contact with the vehicle seat surface.
You cannot install with both systems. Both are incredibly effective on their own for proper installation.
The base is not required to achieve a safe and secure install. The lap belt routes through the guides on the carrier that are located near the carry handle and the shoulder belt routes behind the carrier through the guide located above the carrier release from base handle. Reference the Mesa Max manual and vehicle manual for seat belt installation guidance.
Ensure the red line on the side of the carrier is parallel to the vehicle floor rather than the ground outside the vehicle. Ensure the back angle of the carrier stays in the correct position and the carry handle is rotated forward to the 4th position.
UPPAbaby prohibits the use of inflatable seat belts with the Mesa Max. Lower anchor install is a great alternative.
Please check your vehicle owner’s manual to confirm use of load leg in your vehicle.
Yes, you must remove the Mesa Max before folding the Vista, Cruz, Ridge or Minu stroller.
The Mesa Max carrier directly attaches to Vista and Cruz strollers, with no adapters needed. The Mesa Max can also attach to the Ridge and Minu stroller with the use of adapters. It can be used parent-facing or forward-facing on all four strollers.

UPPAbaby recommends that 80% of the Mesa Max Infant Car Seat base should cover the vehicle cushion. For reference, the base should be in full contact with the vehicle seat cushion until approximately where the front side of the carrier attachment point starts angling upward.
Both systems are tested to the same rigorous crash testing and meet government safety standards. Your preferred installation method depends on what is best for you, your family, your vehicle and where you get the tightest install every time.
The Mesa Max carry handle is required to be in the 4th (rebound) position when in use for all installation methods.
In a frontal-impact crash, a load leg limits the forward rotation of the Mesa Max keeping the child upright, and transferring that energy down to the vehicle floor rather than the child’s head, neck and spine.
If a proper angle cannot be achieved with the adjustable foot, a rolled towel may be used.
There is a belt path feature added to the back of the Mesa Max carrier. During carrier-only installation, the shoulder belt can be wrapped around the back of the carrier for a more secure install to the vehicle seat. In the event of a collision, this type of installation helps decrease the force on a baby’s shoulders and neck by limiting a downward motion in a frontal crash.
The Anti-Rebound+ Panel adds an extra layer of safety by limiting rearward motion in the event of a frontal-impact (on rebound) or rear-impact crash. In both instances, it reduces stress on a child’s head, neck and spine limiting injury potential.
The Mesa Max has new added safety and comfort features including European belt routing, 43% larger UPF canopy (from current Mesa), larger headrest, 4th rebound carry handle position for vehicle use, infinite adjust headrest, more robust infant inlay and load leg.
The SmartSecure System is a unique technology utilizing a tightness indicator and self-retracting LATCH connectors for fast, accurate and easy installation. An indicator window changes from red to green for visual confirmation the base has been installed correctly.
This Mesa Max Infant Insert is designed to optimize fit and body positioning for your child. The following fit criteria must be achieved before the insert can be removed.
- Harness straps are at or slightly below shoulders
- Bottom of the headrest is positioned at or up to 1” above shoulders
- Chest clip is at armpit level
- Crotch buckle rests securely against child with no gaps and child is not sitting on top of the buckle
- Room to tighten harness properly
- Child is not slouching
* NOTE: You may continue to use the Infant Insert beyond 11lbs until all criteria are met.
UPPAbaby recommends transitioning your child out the Mesa Max by their first birthday or the 1-inch rule, whichever comes first. The 1-inch rule is applied when your child is using the headrest in its highest position and when the top of their head is less than 1-inch from the top of the headrest structure. Please note that transition should also occur when your child meets the 35 lbs. weight limit.
